Treating yourself to a gorgeous set of eyelash extensions is a fabulous little luxury any woman can enjoy, but one thing we must remember is that lash extensions are an investment and a costly one at that. So it very important to educate yourself on the proper way to maintain and care for your lashes at home so that your new lashes stay clean, your lash line stays healthy and you lash extensions last!
Here are a few ways to get the most out of your lash extensions;
1. Shampoo your lashes often-
Many people are hesitant to touch their lash extensions at all after they are applied. But I cannot stress enough how vital it is to cleanse your lashes regularly! Dirt, oil, makeup, and dead skin can build up on your lash line, just like any other part of your body. If you don't cleanse your lash line regularly, you risk skin irritation along your lash line and eyelids, potential infection, lash loss and even lash mites!
(I'll spare you the grizzly and horrific images!)
A simple solution of distilled water, a drop of baby shampoo and a pinch of baking soda works very well as a gentle lash cleanser that won't burn or irritate your eyes. Oil free facial cleansing wipes also work very well because they are lint free and will not leave cotton fibers on your lash extensions.
2. Brush your lashes often-
Typically after your lash service, you are given a clean mascara wand to take home with you. USE IT! Brushing your lashes often will help to keep them separated and defined. Not brushing your lashes will allow them to fuse together over time which may cause discomfort after a while. So brush them throughout the day, placing the mascara wand on top of your lashes, gently pressing downward and rolling the brush outward.
3. Avoid applying oil or oil based facial products near your eyes-
Using oil, oil based moisturizers, or oil cleansers around the eyes can severely shorten the retention of your eyelash extensions. Avoid using anything oil based on or near your eyes to prevent breakdown of the eyelash adhesive.
4. Avoid playing with your eyelash extensions-
Be conscious of pulling, twisting or touching your eyelash extensions with your fingers. Doing this can not only introduce bacteria into your eyes (from your hands), but can potentially damage your natural lashes. The adhesive used to apply lash extensions creates a very strong bond with your natural lashes. Twisting them between your fingers (which some people may do as an anxious habit) will likely break your natural lash or pull out your natural lashes from the follicle.
5. Try your best to sleep on your back-
Sleeping on your side or on your stomach creates friction on the outer corners or your lash line, which will cause premature shedding in that area.
Following these simple steps after the 24 hour lash curing period will greatly improve the health and retention of your eyelash extensions. I encourage you to try these steps with your next full set or fill!
